A medieval legend tells the story of the city of Silene in present-day Libya which was terrorized by a ferocious dragon that wreaked havoc and fear upon the population. To appease the dragon, the people offered it a human sacrifice every day, chosen by lottery. One day, as ill luck would have it, the king's daughter was picked. However, on her way to her destined fate, a gallant knight who happened to be passing by volunteered to protect her. George waged a bitter struggle with the fierce creature until he finally managed to pierce it in the chest with his lance. A beautiful rosebush blossomed from the dragon's blood and the knight gave it to the princess.

Saint George And The DragonStatue 01001975 is Lladro's interpretation in porcelain of the legendary episode. This sculpture is part of a Limited Edition of 350 pieces made in High Porcelain, the brand's maximum artistic category. In these creations, Lladro puts all its potential at the service of creativity, without restrictions in deadlines or technical limitations, paying them the painstaking attention to detail that goes into great works of art.

Artistically speaking, worth underscoring is the wealth of enamels, with around twenty different tones applied on the dragon and a variety of textures that accentuates the modeling and affords the mythical beast greater volume. On the contrary, the depiction of the knight is given a softer treatment, tempered by the clear skin and the classically handsome features. The contrast is further enhanced by the white of the knight's faithful steed, a symbol of the nobility, bravery and loyalty necessary to conquer evil.

One should also bear in mind the technical complexity involved in balancing such a dynamic creation, with the dragon in a contorted posture and the knight and his horse rising in the heat of the battle. The composition calls for the model to be fragmented into a large number of parts before being subsequently reconstructed, as well as particularly elaborate processes of decoration and firing.
