This medicine is a vitamin
 
It is used for:
- Therapy of folic acid deficiency states that cannot be corrected through diet
- Prevention of neural tube defects in newborns through preventative treatment of women at increased risk (e.g. if a child has previously been born with a neural tube defect or in women who suffer from seizures and are being treated with antiepileptic drugs). Taking folic acid is also recommended with a wholesome diet.
- Treatment of increased levels of homocysteine ​​in the blood caused by folic acid deficiency.
Homocysteinemia can only be treated with folic acid if a vitamin B12 deficiency has been ruled out.

  • The preparation is used for:

  • Duration of application
    • Treatment of folic acid deficiency and increased homocysteine ​​concentration in the blood:
      • The duration of treatment depends on the extent of the folic acid deficiency and depends on the clinical picture and, if necessary, on the corresponding laboratory diagnostic measurements and is determined by the doctor for each patient.
    • Prevention of neural tube defects in newborns:
      • It is important that you start taking the tablets before you become pregnant (preferably four weeks before). The treatment should then be continued for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

 

  • If you take more of the medicine than you should:
    • With occasional higher doses, no overdose symptoms are to be expected.
    • However, patients with seizure disorders may experience an increase in the tendency to convulsions.
    • At high doses (over 15 mg per day and for more than four weeks), bitter taste, loss of appetite, nausea, bloating, nightmares, agitation and depression may occur.

  • If you forget to take the medicine:
    • Do not take a double dose if you forget to take the previous dose, but continue taking the tablets as normal.

 

  • If you stop taking the medicine:

Interactions :
  • When taken with other medicines:
    • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even if they are non-prescription medicines.
    • Treatment with anti-seizure medications (anticonvulsants) can lead to an increase in the tendency to convulsions.
    • When high doses are administered, it cannot be ruled out that folic acid and folic acid inhibitors administered at the same time (folic acid antagonists), such as: B. certain drugs against bacterial infections or malaria (trimethoprim, proguanil, pyrimethamine) and methotrexate (active ingredient for the treatment of tumors, among other things), inhibit each other's effects.
    • The simultaneous administration of high doses of folic acid with 5-fluorouracil (an agent used to treat tumors) causes an increase in the effectiveness and also the toxicity of 5-fluorouracil. Severe diarrhea may occur.
    • Chloramphenicol (an active ingredient used to treat infections) may prevent the response to treatment with folic acid and should therefore not be given to patients with severe folic acid deficiency symptoms.
Contraindications :

    • if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to folic acid or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.
    • if there is anemia due to impaired development of red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia), as the increase in young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid administration can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. Because of the risk of irreversible neurological disorders, before treating anemia it is important to ensure that it is not due to a vitamin B12 deficiency. The cause of megaloblastic anemia must be clarified before therapy begins.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding :
  • There are no known risks for doses of up to 5 mg folic acid per day. Folic acid must not be used in doses higher than 5 mg per day during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
