What are acetyl-L-carnitine, L-glutamine, taurine, citicoline, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, alpha-lipoic acid and pantothenic acid?

Acetyl-L-carnitine is a special form of the amino acid carnitine, of which only the L-form is biologically active. L-carnitine is derived from the essential amino acids L-lysine and L-methionine and is mainly found in animal foods. 

Fruit, vegetables and other plant-based foods, on the other hand, contain only small amounts of carnitine. If the intake of carnitine is high, more acetyl-L-carnitine is formed within the energy-supplying cells during physical activity. With a share of 20%, L-glutamine is the most important free amino acid in blood plasma and muscle tissue. 

Taurine is an amino acid derivative that is involved in various biological functions such as regulating cell growth and stabilizing cell membranes. It is mainly synthesized in the liver and brain with the participation of vitamin B6. 

Taurine is found almost exclusively in meat and fish and rarely in plant-based foods.

Citicoline is quickly and extensively absorbed by the body. There is a split into choline and cytidine. Both substances are also produced by the body itself. Choline is a precursor to phospholipids, which are important components of cell membranes. By consuming a daily dose of Jarrow ^® Neuro Optimizer, the body receives around 60 mg of additional choline due to the citicoline content.

Phosphatidylcholine, formerly also called lecithin, is also converted to a certain extent into choline during hydrolysis, which is required for lipid metabolism. Like phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine is obtained from soy lecithin.

This phospholipid contains the amino acid serine and two fatty acids. Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing, non-essential food component that
exists in an oxidized and in a cell membrane-reduced form. Alpha-lipoic acid is involved in many enzymatic reactions. Health claims for alpha-lipoic acid in food supplements have not yet been recognized.

Pantothenic acid belongs to the complex of B vitamins and is therefore also known as vitamin B5. It contributes to normal mental performance, normal energy-yielding metabolism and a reduction in tiredness and fatigue.
