Vicia faba, also known as broad bean, belongs to the legume family. Its use goes back many years; broad beans were cultivated as early as 6000 BC. It gradually spread as a cultivated plant from the southern Mediterranean to Central Europe. In addition to the main components such as carbohydrates and proteins, the broad bean, which can grow up to 2 meters tall, also contains the amino acid levodopa (L-dopa). Even though the plant's beans basically contain L-dopa, they are not suitable as a source of levodopa in the normal diet, as this is largely destroyed during cooking.
