The drug is a disinfectant, antiseptic (germicidal agent) for use on the skin, mucous membranes and wounds.
It is used once to disinfect the outer skin, the oral mucosa, the vagina, the cervix and the urethra.
The medicinal product is used repeatedly, for a limited period of time as an antiseptic for hand disinfection, bladder catheterization and damaged skin, e.g. B. pressure sores, leg ulcers, superficial wounds and burns.

Always use the medicine exactly as described or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The drug is intended for external use undiluted and in dilutions. It is to be applied to the area to be treated until it is completely wetted. The antiseptic film that forms when it dries can be easily washed off with water.
For skin disinfection or antiseptics of the mucous membrane, e.g. B. before surgical interventions, biopsies, injections, punctures, blood sampling, bladder catheterization, the drug is to be used undiluted.
For skin disinfection of skin with few sebaceous glands, the exposure time is at least 1 minute, with skin rich in sebaceous glands at least 10 minutes. The skin must be kept moist with the undiluted product throughout the exposure time.
During the pre-operative skin disinfection, the formation of "puddles" under the patient must be avoided because of possible skin irritation.
Hygienic and surgical hand disinfection (in case of intolerance to alcoholic hand disinfectants):
- For hand disinfection, the drug should be used undiluted. For hygienic hand disinfection, 3 ml of the solution is rubbed into the hands. Wash hands after an exposure time of 1 minute.
- For surgical hand disinfection, 2 x 5 ml solution is rubbed into the hands for 5 minutes. The hands must be kept moist with the undiluted product throughout the exposure time.
For the antiseptic treatment of superficial wounds, including burns, the drug is applied undiluted to the areas to be treated.
For antiseptic rinses, the drug can be diluted. The following dilutions are recommended as guide values:
- Rinsing as part of wound treatment (e.g. pressure sores, leg ulcers, burns) and perioperative infection prophylaxis 1:2 to 1:20.
Normal tap water is suitable for dilution. If approximate isotonicity is desired, physiological saline or Ringer's solution can be used. The dilutions must always be freshly prepared and used up as soon as possible.
The brown color of the drug is a property of the preparation and indicates its effectiveness.
Extensive discoloration indicates that the effectiveness of the preparation has been exhausted.

duration of use
- In the case of repeated use, the frequency and duration of use depends on the present indication.
- The medicine can be used once or several times a day.
- Wound treatment should be continued as long as there are signs of infection or a clear risk of infection in the wound conditions.
- If your symptoms have not improved after several days (2 to 5 days) of regular use, or if symptoms recur after the end of the treatment, please consult your doctor.

Side effects :

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Rare (less than 1 in 1,000 but more than 1 in 10,000 people treated):
- Skin irritation after skin disinfection before surgery or surgery.
- Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity reactions), contact allergic reactions that can manifest themselves in the form of itching, burning, reddening, blisters or similar.
Very rare (less than 1 in 10,000 people treated):
- Allergic (hypersensitivity) reaction, often accompanied by a drop in blood pressure, dizziness, nausea and possibly shortness of breath (anaphylactic reactions) or allergic painful swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, especially in the facial area (angioedema).
Significant iodine uptake can occur with long-term use of the drug on extensive wound and burn surfaces. In individual cases, patients with a history of thyroid disease may have hyperthyroidism (iodine-induced hyperthyroidism), sometimes with symptoms such as B. pulse acceleration or inner restlessness (see category "Contraindications").
The occurrence of (additional) electrolyte and serum osmolarity disorders, impairment of kidney function and hyperacidity of the blood (metabolic acidosis) have been described after the use of large amounts of medicinal products containing povidone-iodine (e.g. in the treatment of burns).

Interactions :

Use together with other medicines
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines.
- It is to be expected that povidone-iodine, the active substance of the medicinal product, interacts with protein and various other organic substances, e.g. B. blood and pus components, reacts, which can impair its effectiveness.
- With the simultaneous use of the drug and enzymatic wound treatment agents, the enzyme component is oxidized by the iodine, thereby weakening the effect of both drugs. A mutual weakening of the effect also occurs when used at the same time as disinfectants containing silver, hydrogen peroxide or taurolidine.
- The medicinal product must not be used at the same time or for a short time afterwards with mercury-containing wound treatment or disinfectants, since under certain circumstances a substance can form from iodine and mercury that damages the skin.
- Patients who are treated with lithium preparations should avoid regular use of the drug, especially over large areas, since absorbed iodine can promote the possible triggering of hypothyroidism by lithium.

Contraindications :

The drug must not be used
- if you are allergic to iodine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
- if you suffer from an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or another existing (manifest) thyroid disease,
- if you suffer from the very rare chronic skin inflammation dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring,
- if you are planning or undergoing radiation therapy of the thyroid gland with iodine (radioiodine therapy) (until the end of the treatment).

Pregnancy and lactation :

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
During pregnancy and lactation, the drug is to be used only on the express instructions of the doctor and is extremely limited. In this case, it is necessary to check the thyroid function in the child. Accidental ingestion of the drug by the infant through the mouth on the nursing mother's breast must be avoided at all costs.

Warnings and Precautions
- Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
- After thyroid disease or in the case of a goiter, you should only use the medicine over a long period of time and over a large area (e.g. over 10% of the body surface and for longer than 14 days) if your doctor has expressly instructed you to. Even after the end of the therapy (up to 3 months) one should pay attention to early symptoms of a possible hyperthyroidism (see category "side effects") and monitor the thyroid function if necessary.
- Regular use of the drug should be avoided with concomitant lithium therapy (see category "Interactions").
- when disinfecting the skin before surgical interventions or operations, puddle formation under the patient should be avoided because of possible skin irritation and possible skin burns (2nd - 3rd degree).
newborns and infants
- In newborns and infants up to the age of 6 months, the drug should only be used on the doctor's express orders and should only be used to a very limited extent. In this case, a check of the thyroid function is necessary. Accidental ingestion of the drug by the infant by mouth must be avoided at all costs.
Elderly people
- The risk of thyroid hyperfunction caused by iodine is increased in older people. You should therefore only use the medicine after consulting your doctor. In older patients with goiter or a particular predisposition to thyroid dysfunction, extensive and long-term use should only be carried out on the express instructions of the doctor. If necessary, monitor thyroid function.
Influencing diagnostic tests or radioiodine therapy
- Because of the oxidizing effect of the active ingredient povidone-iodine, various diagnostic agents can deliver false-positive results during treatment (including toluidine and guaiac resin for determining hemoglobin or glucose in the stool or urine). The uptake of iodine by the thyroid gland can be influenced by povidone-iodine; this can lead to disruptions in diagnostic examinations of the thyroid gland (thyroid scintigraphy, PBI determination, radioiodine diagnostics) during treatment with the drug and make planned radioiodine therapy impossible. There should be an interval of at least 1-2 weeks after stopping treatment with the drug before recording a new scintigram.
