How heartburn develops
Stomach acid has the function of digesting food and killing the bacteria in it. In contrast to the stomach, however, the esophagus does not have a protective layer of mucus. What is an alginate?
Alginate, the main active ingredient in Gaviscon ^®, is obtained from the brown alga "Laminaria hyperborea" and is purely vegetable. The principle of action works on a physical basis: when it comes into contact with gastric acid, alginate forms a protective barrier with inclusion of carbon dioxide, which, like an air mattress, lays on the liquid stomach contents and, like a lid, prevents gastric acid from flowing back into the esophagus. After a while, the protective film slowly dissolves and is completely excreted without being absorbed into the bloodstream. This results in a very low risk of side effects.
