Gastric acid blockers (proton pump inhibitors, also known as PPIs) are drugs that inhibit gastric acid production. As a result, the amount of acid in the stomach decreases, which is a desired therapeutic effect in a large number of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, e.g. B. in the treatment of ulcer or reflux diseases. The latter is also known as "heartburn". However, in addition to defending against unwanted microorganisms, gastric acid also has important functions in the digestion of our food.
