You can use the Ford FDRS software without purchasing a license. Unfortunately, vehicle communications will not work unless you have an active, currently updated Ford FDRS subscription. Authentic Ford OEM diagnostics scan tool that works with the Ford FDRS diagnostics application running on a PC to diagnose Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. Ford and VCM II are used under license from Ford Motor Company

- Wireless functionality is preferred for all FDRS functions including module reprogramming. USB wired connections are only required to update the VCM 3 loaded code and to set up the VCM 3 to function as a Customer Flight Recorder
