Why an iodine product is useful
Our body depends on iodine for many functions, but can neither produce it itself nor store it in sufficient quantities.
Among other things, iodine is needed for the production of thyroid hormones, which are also responsible for regulating metabolic processes. Since a large proportion of iodine is excreted by the body when thyroid hormones are broken down, we should always consume a sufficient amount of iodine.
Iodine is mainly found in animal products such as meat and fish, so additional intake of the trace element is particularly useful for vegetarians and vegans.
Germany is one of the iodine-deficient areas
. Iodine is only found in very small quantities in German soils. As a result, it is lacking in both human and animal feed. To improve the population's iodine supply, iodized table salt is offered and iodine is added to animal feed. However, an adequate supply of iodine should not be a reason to consume more salt or animal products.
Iodine from algae can also be obtained as a vegan alternative. However, since the iodine content can vary greatly between different types of algae, one should ensure that the iodine content is clearly declared before using algae as a regular source of iodine.
The German Nutrition Society recommends a daily intake of 180–200 μg for adults. Pregnant women should consume 230 μg of iodine daily, and breastfeeding women 260 μg.
