The fungus Cordyceps sinensis is mainly found in Tibet and thrives there at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters. Cordyceps is actually a parasitic fungus that affects the caterpillars of a specific moth. It attacks the caterpillar and then forms its fruiting bodies on it. The body of the caterpillar thus becomes the host of the fungus, which continues to spread and completely invades the caterpillar with its mycelium. After growing through, the host caterpillar looks like a mushroom growing out of the ground.
