• Iodide is a trace element that is required both for the formation of thyroid hormones and for normal thyroid function. It is normally ingested with food, high levels are found in fish and seafood and in dairy products. Inadequate iodine supply can lead to reduced production of thyroid hormones and the development of goiter, even in the unborn child. Potassium iodide, the active ingredient in iodide tablets, can compensate for insufficient iodine supply.
• The medicine is used:
  • to prevent goiter in the event of insufficient dietary iodine intake, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • to prevent the goiter from growing again after the end of a goiter treatment or after goiter surgery
  • for the treatment of iodine-deficiency goiter in newborns, children and adolescents.

• Always take iodide exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
• Your daily iodide dosage depends on your dietary iodine intake and why you are taking iodide. In general, the following dosage recommendations can be used as guidelines. If you are unsure, consult your doctor, especially about the dosage for your baby or toddler under 4 years of age.
• To prevent iodine-deficiency goiter when your dietary iodine intake is inadequate:
  • 50-100 micrograms iodide/day for infants and children
  • 100-200 micrograms iodide/day for adolescents and adults
  • 100 - 200 micrograms iodide/day for pregnant women and nursing mothers
  • (One tablet corresponds to 200 micrograms daily; tablets with a lower active ingredient content are available for doses of less than 200 micrograms.)
• To prevent regrowth of a goiter after completion of goiter treatment or after goiter surgery:
  • 100 - 200 micrograms iodide/day
  • (One tablet corresponds to 200 micrograms daily; tablets with a lower active ingredient content are available for doses of less than 200 micrograms.)
• For the treatment of goiter in newborns, children and adolescents when there is insufficient iodine supply:
  • 100 - 200 micrograms iodide/day for newborns and children
  • (One tablet corresponds to 200 micrograms daily; tablets with a lower active ingredient content are available for doses of less than 200 micrograms.)
  • 200 micrograms iodide/day for adolescents
  • (corresponds to 1 tablet daily)

• duration of treatment
  • The duration of treatment may vary depending on the reason you are taking iodide:
    • To prevent goiter growth, iodide generally has to be taken for years, often for life.
    • For the treatment of goiter in newborns, a treatment period of 2 - 4 weeks is usually sufficient. For children, adolescents and adults, 6 - 12 months or more are usually required.
  • If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

• If you take more than you should
  • If you have taken more Jodid than recommended, please contact your doctor immediately, he will decide on any necessary measures.

• If you forget to take a dose
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

• The medicine is intended for ingestion. Take your daily iodide dose with some liquid (e.g. half a glass of water) after a meal.

side effects

• Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
• If you have large, uncontrolled hormone-producing areas in the thyroid gland (autonomous areas) and you consume more than 150 micrograms of iodide per day, it is possible that you may develop an overproduction of the thyroid gland, which needs to be treated. Ask your doctor if this applies to you.
• If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.

• Taking with other medicines
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking any of the following substances as they reduce the effect of iodide and can cause goitre.
    • Antithyroid drugs (medication to treat hyperthyroidism),
    • Perchlorate, thiocyanates and other substances that can inhibit the absorption of iodide in the thyroid gland,
    • Lithium (for example, a component of certain medicines used to treat depression) in combination with high doses of iodide
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking certain hormones (thyrotropin, TSH) that can stimulate thyroid function, as these can increase the effects of iodide.
  • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using or have recently taken/used other medicines, even if they are non-prescription medicines.

Contraindications

• The drug must not be taken
  • if your thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone
  • if there are certain nodes or areas in the thyroid gland that produce thyroid hormones uncontrollably (so-called autonomous adenomas, focal or diffuse thyroid autonomy)
  • if you are allergic to iodide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
• Please talk to your doctor if you are not sure whether any of the above applies to you.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

• If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is advisable to continue treatment with iodide. Discuss this with your doctor, who will examine you regularly. Your doctor will recommend a dose based on your dietary iodine intake. Your baby does not need any additional iodine if you take iodide and breastfeed, as it will then be supplied with sufficient iodine through breast milk.
• Be careful not to take more than the recommended dose, as very high doses of iodide during pregnancy and breast-feeding can damage your unborn or newborn baby's thyroid gland. You should therefore also consider the iodine content of food supplements (e.g. vitamin preparations) that you are taking at the same time. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure.

• Warnings and Precautions
  • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
  • Particular caution is required when taking iodide
    • if you have previously had an overactive thyroid gland or suffered from goiter, consult your doctor before starting therapy with Jodide. Your doctor will then need to check whether you have a thyroid disorder.
  • This also applies if you have an enlarged thyroid gland with nodules. If you have hot nodules, you must not consume more than 150 micrograms of iodide per day.
  • If you have to undergo an examination or therapy with radioiodine, please inform your doctor that you are taking iodide. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking iodide because iodide can affect how radioiodine works.

  • Iodide has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
