Cistus incanus, a genus belonging to the family of Cistaceae, provides a rich source of polyphenols and various Cistus species herbal teas have been used in folk medicine for treatment of diarrhea, fever, and skin disorders. It also has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents



Scientists have discovered that extracts of the medicinal plant Cistus incanus (Ci) prevent human immunodeficiency viruses from infecting cells. Active antiviral ingredients in the extracts inhibit docking of viral proteins to cells. Antiviral activity of Cistus extracts also targets Ebola- and Marburg viruses.

The grey-haired cistus (Cistus incanus) is a tea plant native to the Mediterranean region that contains valuable polyphenols. Cistus tea has a long tradition, especially in Greece, but has been forgotten over time. In 1999, Cistus incanus was voted "Plant of the Year" and thus rediscovered. Cistus herb are the leaves of the shrub from which the valuable labdanum is obtained. Labdanum was dedicated to the goddess of love Aphrodite in Cyprus.
